New site design debuts - 11.15.07
Welcome to the revamped Weis Project! In the coming weeks (or months; we'll see), the site will be in a period of transition. New styles will be rolled out across the site, and information individual stores will be rewritten.

You might have noticed that information in this site is becoming outdated as Weis replaces, expands, renovates, or closes its stores. It's not possible to keep this site completely current, but that is not a problem. As information is rewritten, the site will become less about the company's current status and more about the history and development of its stores.

Annual report - 11.14.07
Be sure to check out the 1967 Weis Markets annual report, celebrating the opening of a new store in Camp Hill, Pa., and announcing the purchase of Albany Public Markets. It's quite gem.

Perry Hall store upgraded - 9.14.07
Weis, on its website, announces the "extensive remodel" of its Perry Hall store—just three years after it opened! The Perry Hall store, recorded by the Weis Project on December 27, 2004, now sports an "upgraded interior" and "new interior decor and lighting." My immediate travel plans don't include a trip to Maryland, so I can only wonder what new designs the company has rolled out.

Welcome to the Weis Project. The Weis Project is a study of Weis Markets, a mid-sized supermarket chain in central Pennsylvania founded in 1912. Given its age, the company is a case study in the history of American grocery retailing. And that's why this site is here: to explore the development of the supermarket in general, using Weis Markets as a specific example.

The Weis Project presents both historical artifacts of the company—old advertisements, store flyers, and newspaper and magazine articles—and field studies of the varied stores within the chain. The project is largely the work of one person, but visitors with any information about the company—old photographs, articles, annual reports, or anecdotes from personal history—are strongly encouraged to contribute. Please e-mail the site manager with any information you might have.
